My game was 98% skill and 2% chance. It consisted of knowing your multiplication skills. Being able to use the numbers 1 through 12 to figure out what two numbers on the board, when multiplied, gives you the number they spun on the wheel. Also, because they only had 30 seconds to figure it out there was a element of speed that was implemented, another skill. However, there was a hint of chance in my game, if you spun the wheel and landed on you win he player would have received 10 tickets without even answering a question.

I think people responded well the the style of the game. They wanted to play and realized, quickly that it wasn’t as easy as they thought it would be. Some of the kids were stuck on certain numbers and couldn’t come up with a combination.

My game was truly a showcase of knowledge game. It didn’t require students to learn much. However, in the end they would learn whether or not they really knew there required multiplication tables (1 through 12 table).

The mechanics of the game I feel were good. The mechanical areas of the game is what I would have changed. The board wasn’t very stable at all that was something I was most disappointed in. Another major issue I encountered was the fact that he balloons were not big enough to pop. This took most of the fun out of the game, I felt. I would have liked to work that out before the day we presented the games.The only rule I would have, and technically did change, was the one about popping ALL possible combinations. That rule I altered decided as long as the player gave me one they could win some tickets.

One of my favorite games was Find the Ace. I enjoyed that it was the complete opposite of my game, all chance. Iliked that it was a spn off of Deal or No Deal. The game was exciting, it gave suspense and was fun to play. However, out of all the games I played Physical Fitness Plinko was one that could have used a slight change. I loved the Plinko board and the way in which you won the tokens to play on the board but I didn’t like the structure of the rules at the beginning. For one the definitions written on the card needed to be more legible. Two, I feel each player should have received maybe 50 or 60 seconds to place the definitions in the right spot. Third the fact the the player was handed the definitions kind of slowed down a part of the game that as suppose to be speedy. Other than that the game was awesome!

I loved this class. My expectation was that it was going to be computer based with exams on how to operate programs and technical devices. I was happy to see the class was not like that at all. Having the class goal be an arcade game for students to play to help them learn was a fantastic idea. I feel it taught us, as teachers, to be open to the idea that chalk, notes and textbook readings aren’t always as effective in teaching as making learning fun. We have to add technology and it isn’t limited to computers technology can be anything, any tool, that isn’t text based.

My favorite assignment this class was the maker Research Assignment. I found MOOC’s to be so interesting. Learning how they worked, what their goal was originally and how that goal changed over time. I was interested in all the problems that contributed t the POSSIBLE demise of MOOC’s as a creditable way to earn a degree. I would change this class by NOT making it a winter course but rather a regular semester course. I think that would allow students to really create an amazing game that would not only be fun an learning oriented but one tht they could later implement in their own classroom.

BINGO SPEED

One of the main traditional lesson plan is teaching students how to add. The knowledge of addition allows students to move on to learning how to subtract, multiply and divide. It all starts with addition, so I believe. I remember growing up and first being taught the concept of adding from my family. Learning to count my toys and money(coins) were just the beginning. When I started school, I can clearly remember my teacher teaching us how to add from using blocks and other class materials.

Objectives

1. The students should be able to explain up to 3 different reasons that being able to add is important                                                                                                                                        2. At the end of this lesson the students should be able to add different objects together to find out how many objects there are total.

Materials

1. 5 colorful building blocks
2. 5 pieces of paper with the numbers 1 through 10 on them

Introduction

The teacher should start out by explaining that addition is simply the combination of 2 or more different groups of numbers. For example if you have a pile with 2 objects in it and another pile with one object in it you get three. The teacher should count the separate piles, then put the piles together and count them again. Next the teacher should get five students to come up to the front of the room. The students should be split up into 2 groups one with 3 individuals and the other with 2. The students in the first group should each get pieces of paper with the numbers 1, 2 and 3 written on them. The students in the second group should get the numbers 4 and 5. The class should then count the students in the first group. The teacher should then say that we are now going to add 2 and 3 together. As the group of two moves to the group of three the teacher should say that we have just added 2 to 3. The students should then count the this new group and come up with the number five. The teacher should not move on if the students do not readily recount the new group and do not seem to understand that the groups have now been combined.

Main lesson

The teacher should now talk to the students about the different ways we can use addition in our everyday lives. The teacher should give the example of figuring out how many fish are in the fish tank. The fish could be separated in several ways depending on what fish are in the tank. If there is 1 black fish and 2 gold fish this is an easy number for the children to add. The teacher should then have the students take turns going around the room and looking for things they could add together. The teacher should be accepting of most anything the students want to add. If one student want to add three block and one desk that is OK. The teacher should then ask the students about things in their homes that they can add and ask everybody to think of something at home tonight that it could be beneficial to add.

Conclusion

As a conclusion to this lesson the teacher should have several different objects that she has gathered for the students to add. Each student should get a chance to do this. If any students make a mistake the teacher should correct them and help the students by having them count each pile and then count the piles together.

Evaluation

The students should be informally evaluated based on how the teacher has observed them answering questions. A short quiz could be used as well, but should not take more then five minutes to finish.

To get students to have more fun with addition. A play I decided to add to is- BINGO. Each student gets a bingo card with random number problems on them (2+1, 3+5…etc). Each bingo card may have different number problems but at the same level of difficulty. The game is played just like bingo except the teacher gives the answer to the number problem and the students have to see which number problem equals to the given answer, if the student have that number problem on his/her bingo card then they can cover it with a chip. Some cards may have more then one number problem to the given answer, which is okay the student can cover all the number problems that gives the answer the teacher announced.Once a student has 5 in a row either horizontally  vertically or diagonally then the student wins BINGO.

Using BINGO to learn addition

I tried this game a couple of time with my younger brother and his friend,Nick. Of course I was playing the teacher and calling out the numbers as they were playing the students and trying to figure out which number problems made the answers. Even thought the math problems were easy they were still having little difficulty because the game makes you think fast. It was a fun and exciting game because they both were so desperately waiting for me to say the next number so they can try to hit BINGO before each other. I found it really fun and I believe if we have more players it would be even more fun. It is a really good way to teach students math because kids love games. They would be competing against one another which will make them want to do the math problem at the same time learning it too.

Prize-

Since it was short notice for my brother and his friend Nick. I did not have any appropriate prize to give so they came up with the idea “The winner gets $5.” I really needed participate so I went with it. However, when playing the game with students- prizes would be school related.

Ticket winning- would be pretty easy. They would have to add up the rows of number they made BINGO in. Depending on the amount, they would win prizes in that range.
