My Nephew’s Funny picture..

I decided to do the visual assignments part for our DS106 assignments.  I had a lot of funny and cute picture of my nephew.  I just use one of them and add the caption.  I had a lot of fun doing this. I saw other people’s post of this kind of edited picture.   But this time I learned how to do it and I made a funny picture with funny caption.  To edit my picture I used a this website one of the classmate shared in his blog.

I saw the caption somewhere and just add them to my nephew’s picture.  Computers were really created to save our time but we waste our time the when using computer.  The reason I put this caption is because on one hand computers and cellphones made our lives easy but on the other hand it made us lazy and waste our time.  I don’t have a Facebook account because I think this is such a waste of time.  I see how my brother and sister waste their in the Facebook My sister supposed to study for her SAT, but she is on Facebook most of the time, either playing or just wondering someone else pages.  My supervisor also told me one day that last summer he played FarmVille for nine days continuously without doing anything else and last day he realized how much time he wasted and stopped playing it.  So, we should utilize our time and invest it to do something creative.

DS106 Radio Bumper – Audio

I decided to do a radio bumper (just learned that cool term) for DS106.  I recorded my voice using GarageBand, added effects, and an apple loop.  I learned how to export a track from the GarageBand software and upload it to SoundCloud.  Enjoy!

Digital Storytelling

For our DS106 assignments, I chose to do the visual assignments part ( Caption That). I was able to find this cute picture from Google search and then edited it from Photoshop Express. It allowed me to add text to my imagine and also work with the contrast and brightening of the picture. I did not know much about editing photographs, as I was working  on this part of my assignment- I was also learning the different techniques on how to edit pictures, add bubbles, frame etc.  Photoshop express will definitely be my to go site when I will need to work on editing photographs. At first it was hard to grasp the understanding of the website but after playing around with it- it became a lot easier to use.

Learning objective for K12 would be how the kids can be creative and make a story or conversation from a still picture. Finding a picture from the web and them being able to create a story around it.  They would all be given a certain amount of time period and the tools to complete their assignment.  I think they would all really enjoy doing this if given full explanation and an example of their assignment. For example- I found a picture of a girl and a penguin and tried to make a conversation about it. To modify the assignment, the kids will have to find two pictures and then use their creative minds to make a story to link two different pictures together. This would allow them to explore more and help become better critical thinkers.

For the second part of our assignment, I chose to do a video (Inanimate motion). Making inanimate motion video was a lot harder than I had thought it would be. First I thought of the script and which toys I would have to use. I went over to my cousins house and used the toys they had. We took pictures step by step trying to make the script work. Taking pictures of every move and putting it all together to make it seem like they are actually moving took me some time. I had to fix the timing and put it all together. Windows Live Movie Maker helped me a lot in completing my assignment.

Learning objective for K12- how to bring creative thoughts into a video. Students can write a short story first and then based on it would have to make a video. They can either use their toys or draw pictures of their choice in order to play out the story they wrote. This would also help modify the original assignment. I learned how to use the video media to make a video with using just pictures. I learned when making video using pics, timing is very important, because with each photographs- it is a movement in the video. It took me a lot of tries and a lot of photo shots to get it just right.

Overall, this assignment helped me acquire skills I did not think I had. I love photography but never really worked with editing them. I made videos but did not know how to edit them either. I was able to learn a lot from this and the tools used gave me a better understanding of how to be able to use them correctly.

Digital Fusion Cusine

For Mission: DS106 I decided to do a design and video assignment. For the design assignment I chose to create an animated magazine cover. I thought these would be pretty cool if they actually existed on newsstands, so it sounded fun.

I used the December 2012 cover of Black Enterprise (the self-proclaimed “#1 Resource for Black Entrepreneurs, Professionals and Small Businesses”). The original features actor-comedian, Kevin Hart, who has an alter-ego named Chocolate Droppa. Chocolate Droppa is pretty much the worst rapper, ever, who probably talks more than he raps.

I put a little animation from the Flight of the Conchords’ song “Hiphopopotamus vs. Rhymenoceros” (great song, btw).

Now a worldwide pop-culture, hip-hop was originally a black american enterprise, and even though these three people are just having fun with it, I thought it fit.

Kevin Hart (top) with the Flight of the Conchords take the rap world by storm.

For the video assignment I tried to visualize a song, “Let the Sunshine In (Reprise)”, by the 5th Dimension. I’ve always thought it was a powerful, soul-filled song. It’s one of those songs that I wished were longer (actually there is a longer version, that’s also pretty good; Billboard’s has it pegged at the #57th greatest song of all-time). One of the songs I wish I were around for when it was being tested out on the road, maybe in some oversized shack of a music house, where the only drink on the menu was moonshine. Needless to say I think it invokes a lot of emotion, almost in a celebratory way. But I can also see it as a terribly miserable song, that can also sound like a pleading to darker world.

I juxtaposed the song with some USG film and photos of atomic testing and the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I did this to play on the miserable plea theme combined with one of the faces nuclear fusion.

Nuclear fusion is the power source of the Sun and hence life as we know it, so I think it’s a wonderful thing. Being a huge proponent of nuclear energy (I want nuclear reactors providing the majority of the baseline power in this country and wherever possible, especially in poorer parts of the world) I wanted to explore why most citizens of the world are bitterly opposed to the idea of nuclear energy. I think that people associate it with the horrors of nuclear weapons, so this song visualization is a mix of those fears contrasted with the celebration of the longest running fusion reactor in our neighborhood, the driver of life, our Sun.

Cat Makeup – Visual

Meet my cat, Nelly.  I decided to do the “Makeup Your Pet” assignment in the “Visual Assignments” category.  I chose to embarrass my cat because sometimes he’s a bastard.  I used pixlr to create this masterpiece and learned a bunch of new tricks, like how to crop and zoom.  I also played around with picmonkey but found that to use all the cool features you need to upgrade to the full version.  I also learned how to incorporate text into the picture.

This is the most hilarious assignment I’ve had here at York College.  Enjoy!
